Commissioned by the municipality, the company has contributed to creating a site that not only handles waste but also encourages recycling and reuse among local residents.
From idea to reality
Karmøy Municipality aimed to develop a facility that would make it easier for residents to sort waste and recognize the value of recycling. A central feature of the design is a large, canopy-shaped roof—resembling a leaf—that provides shelter from the elements, enabling recycling activities to take place in all weather conditions.
“The municipality wants to promote a recycling mindset and encourage residents to think reuse—not just disposal,” says Pål Hystad, Architect at Omega 365 Areal.
Omega 365 Areal’s role
As the project’s design lead, Omega 365 Areal worked closely with Karmøy Municipality and local users in Borgaredalen to develop a facility that meets both operational and community needs. This included optimizing space and transport flow, selecting appropriate building-material, and ensuring suitable working conditions for employees.
Omega 365 Areal were also assigned by Veidekke, one of Scandinavia’s largest construction and civil engineering companies, to support both the detailed design and construction phases.
“It’s been a long process with extensive user involvement throughout. Several rounds of ideas and cost estimates had to be reworked due to budget constraints,” says Hystad.
To stay within budget, some design choices were revised and simplified, but always with a strong focus on functionality and sustainability.
Hystad concludes, “It has definitely been a valuable learning experience to be part of.”
With construction now complete, Omega 365 Areal looks forward to seeing the facility in full operation and supporting Karmøy Municipality in taking a meaningful step toward a more circular future.
