Spotlight: Karolis Gaidukevičius

Well-traveled software developer

With a passion for problem solving and relationship building, Karolis Gaidukevičius quickly settled into Omega 365. He just returned to Klaipėda, Lithuania from a six-month stay at Omega 365 in Australia.

Karolis Gaidukevičius describes the job as the perfect balance between relationship building and problem solving.

Karolis studied Physical Education at the University of Klaipėda, but quickly realized that this was not the career path he wanted to take. He looked for other options, and landed on a software development course. During the course he created his first "Hello world" app in JAVA. After receiving his vocational "Junior software developer" diploma, he also did an Appframe Certification training on his own before getting an offer from Omega 365.

  • Name: Karolis Gaidukevičius
  • Age: 30
  • From: Klaipėda, Lithuania
  • Omega focus:  Software Developer
  • Background: Went on exchange to one of Omega 365's offices in Australia
  • Location: Klaipėda, Lithuania

“I couldn't believe how lucky I was. At that time I didn't know much about Omega 365. I was just looking for my first job, and to take my first steps into the IT world. I never imagined that I would visit three countries and work with some wonderful people on big projects in the next three years,” he says with a smile.

When he started in Omega 365, he was assigned to build some Workflow modules for the French oil company TotalEnergies, so he considers Workflows to be his area of expertise.

“Later, I joined the Cost Management team and learned more about product development, which is quite different from client work. I am currently working with some of our customers in Australia, where we have started integrating Contract Management modules into the core product.”

Karolis was drawn to his job in IT by coincidence.

“I can't say that I was drawn to this job,” he laughed. “I stumbled upon it more by chance. The IT world was relatively unknown to me, and I had no expectations. But over time, I found that I really enjoyed working with clients, communicating ideas, and finding solutions to clients' problems.”

He describes the job as the perfect balance between relationship building and problem solving.

Six months in Australia

When Karolis heard about an exchange program in Australia he immediately contacted his manager.

“Traveling to the other side of the world seemed rather frightening. I was nervous about whether my English was good enough, and whether I would manage the transition to a new office with new clients. These concerns quickly disappeared when I noticed how friendly and open the people at Omega 365 Australia were,” smiles Karolis.

“Their level of expertise when it came to working with clients amazed me. I quickly realized that it was not going to be just me helping them, but also the other way around, which was really great. From day one, I got to work with one of their clients, who is Australia’s largest renewable energy innovator. It was exciting and educational to work with clients who use our systems, and to experience what users like and what could be improved upon in Pims,” explains Karolis.

What motivates Karolis most in his job is that his work is helpful to the clients, and that he works on solutions to real problems.

For Karolis, the motivation to travel to Australia was to experience a new culture and work environment, and make new friends. In addition, he looked forward to gaining valuable work experience with other clients to better understand what they needed.

As General Manager of Omega 365 Australia, Emma Ireland was pleased with Karolis’ choice to travel to Australia.

“We as a business benefited enormously from having Karolis here. Our main goal for 2023 is to work towards an exchange program with other global offices where our employees can head out to our international offices to teach and to learn from them,” she says

Content-rich and rewarding work

What motivates Karolis most in his job is that his work is helpful to the clients, and that he works on solutions to real problems. In addition, he points out several factors that he believes are important in the software developer profession.

“On the Software development side, critical thinking, the ability to concentrate, and being able to focus on one thing at a time are important. Another essential characteristic is communication skills, managing and building good relationships with colleagues and clients. Getting through challenges and problems is so much easier if there is a feeling of connection, and that we’re all on the same page.”

Right now, the next big task for Karolis is to bring the Contracts Management module into the core product.

“Contract Management comes from the Australian Omega 365 team, and I was lucky to work with the people who built it. I hope my knowledge from there will help our team in Klaipėda to integrate it into the core product and make it available for other clients outside of Australia,” says Karolis.

“Challenges are something I welcome with open arms, and I like to work my way through them. Even though it can sometimes create frustration, the feeling of reaching the finish line is worth it. I appreciate being able to do that here in Omega 365. There is an amazing community here at the Klaipėda office, and the atmosphere here is so good that I get up in the morning with a smile on my face,” smiles Karolis.
