In addition to expertise in engineering, project management, construction, and operations and maintenance, Omega 365 Consulting also has a growing team of IT consultants. These professionals, like Frode, combine technological expertise with practical project experience to secure both information and operations. With services in areas such as cybersecurity, system integration, and advisory, the company delivers comprehensive solutions that address both technical and digital needs. Storheim is leased to Omega 365 Consulting, from his employer Houmb AS.
“I work with what’s called OT networks,” Frode explains. “While IT security focuses on protecting information, OT security is about keeping systems running. We ensure control systems and processes operate normally, without disruptions. If such a system fails, the consequences can be enormous, not just financially, but for safety and emergency preparedness.”
Critical infrastructure
Operational Technology is at the core of Frode’s work, which often involves equipment with a long lifespan. Many of the systems he secures are 15–25 years old. While robust, these systems were not designed for today’s threat landscape. His work requires creativity and a careful balance. Modern security solutions can’t always be applied directly, as these systems may not support newer technologies. It’s about finding the right balance between enhancing security and maintaining operations.
He describes his work as both challenging and meaningful.
“When you stand in front of a backup generator the size of a bus, you realize how vital this work really is. If something goes wrong, the impact can be severe, affecting lives, assets, and safety.”
An evolving threat landscape
Over the past few years, Frode has witnessed significant changes in the threat environment.
“We’re seeing many attacks originating from organized groups. Some focus on gathering data, while others carry out attacks based on that information. The mix of state actors, financially motivated groups, and now artificial intelligence has made the threat landscape more complex than ever.”
He believes AI is both a resource and a risk in security.
“AI can be used to strengthen defenses, but it can also automate attacks. Machines are capable of launching attacks around the clock without pause,” he says.
Security begins with mindset
Frode emphasizes that security isn’t only about tools and technology.
“It’s about the mindset. You can buy all the products in the world, but without routines, training, and awareness, they’re of little use. I’ve seen many municipalities and organizations take this seriously, and the difference is clear. It’s about culture and awareness.”
He advocates for education to prioritize this perspective.
“There are many good cyber studies, but OT security is still underrepresented. Usually, you only learn about it when you’re in the workforce. We have a huge need for specialists, and this is a matter of preparedness. The industry is desperate for qualified security consultants,” he stresses.
More than a job. It’s a lifestyle
Frode describes security work as more than just an ordinary office job.
“It’s a lifestyle. You need to be flexible, travel to clients, and work on-site whether production is halted or ongoing, without disrupting operations. It can be demanding but incredibly rewarding. You get to see how society truly functions behind the scenes and how everything is interconnected.”
He finds great fulfilment in his work.
“It’s a privilege to help protect society’s most critical infrastructure. And even though security costs money, it costs even more if something actually happens.”
